When the person who was bitten is a child

CDC figures have put children at the center of dog-bite injury for decades, especially the face and neck. A bite that would be “a bad week” on an adult forearm is a different life on a seven-year-old’s cheek. The law notices. So do juries. So do insurers, which is why they call the parents quickly.
Medical first, then the file
Pediatric emergency care, not a wait for a pediatrician’s next opening, if the wound is on the face, neck, or hand, or if the child was shaken. Ask that the record say dog bite. Photograph before the dressing if a clinician will let you.
Settlements and courts
Many states require a court or a guardian to approve a child’s settlement. That is a feature. It exists because a parent under pressure will otherwise sign away a scar at week two. A lawyer who regularly does these files knows the local approval practice. A lawyer who does not will learn it on your child.
The family dog
A large share of child bites come from an animal the child knew. That does not make the injury imaginary, and it does not automatically make the owner (sometimes another household member, sometimes a grandparent) immune. Household and intra-family insurance questions are messy. They are also how a lot of medical bills actually get paid.
